SNCG is an undergraduate research group that welcomes graduate students and postdocs to conduct research at the interface of Chemistry, Biology and Material Science. We utilize non-covalent interactions to construct functional molecular structures such as fluorescent sensors and self-assembled nanostructures. We also design and fabricate new materials for environmental and biological applications, which include remediation of wastewater and polluted air, conducting electrodes, PEM membranes, drug nanocarriers, and biosensors.

Chemical Sensors
image

Fast and easy detection of trace analyts is crucial for environmental and medical applications. In our labs we design, synthesize and apply small organic molecules as optical probes for small molecules and ions. For example, we designed fluorescent molecules with appropriate binding sites to detect the presence of anions (such as carboxylate, cyanide and fluoride anions) and signal out their presence and concentration through a change in emission intensity or color.

Materials for Environment
image

The rapid development of industrial plants and touristic activities increase the production of contaminated waste water and polluted sites; the remediation and treatment of such pollution is very important, especially for GCC area. One of our projects aimed at finding a hyper-accumulator plant for remediation of UAE soil that is contaminated with heavy metals. Another project aimed at development of cellulose-based material for removal of heavy metals and oil spills from contaminated water.

Polymers
image

Polymers are important form of organic materials for wide range of applications in material science and engineering. We are designing and preparing polymers and polymer composites and investigating their applications in detection and sequestering of environmental toxins, as proton-exchange membranes in high-temperature fuel cells, and in conducting electrodes. Several projects are being conducted in collaboration with other groups at AUS.

Drug Delivery
image

Current practice in chemotherapy requires the use of high doses of drug to increase its effectiveness on tumor which also result in detrimental side effects of the drug on healthy cells. These side-effects decrease significantly the quality of life of the patient and result in several life-threating conditions. Therefore, in collaboration with UCR group, we are developing ultrasound-triggered drug delivery system for chemotherapy intended to increase the effectiveness of the drug and decrease the side effects of the treatment.
